Westmoreland County Commissioners' Public Meeting

It’s a challenging time for many of us — and it can feel like local government is something that happens to us, not with us.
But every person in Westmoreland County is entitled to show up, to listen, and to be heard.

The Westmoreland County Commissioners’ Public Meetings are open to everyone.

It’s a space where neighbors can hear what’s happening in our county, ask questions, and remind decision-makers that this community belongs to all of us.

Come as you are — curious, concerned, hopeful, or even unsure — because your presence matters.

Together, we make local democracy real.

Saturday, November 1
3–4:30pm

Join a docent-guided tour of The Art of Elizabeth Catlett from the Collection of Samella Lewis.

FREE
Advance registration is required; deadline is October 31.

This exhibition celebrates Elizabeth Catlett’s achievements in sculpture and printmaking and honors a half-century of her artistic activism in support of women. A trailblazing sculptor and printmaker, Catlett spent seven decades creating art that honored the dignity and strength of marginalized communities. Her powerful depictions of laborers, women, and African Americans address social issues relevant in both the United States and Mexico—two countries where she resided during her lifetime. Drawn from the collection of Dr. Samella Lewis (1924–2022)—an artist, historian, and Catlett’s former student—this exhibition highlights Catlett’s impact as an artist and educator. It celebrates her lasting influence and the ways she merged art and activism to inspire change.

Persian American artist Maryam Safajoo is a visual ethnographer and narrative painter based in Morgantown, West Virginia. Recently awarded a 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts, her work preserves and shares the experiences of members of the Iranian Bahá’í community, a religious group that has been systematically persecuted since the 1979 revolution. The individual stories she shares, including those of her family members, are meticulously depicted based on conversations, interviews, and archival research. Safajoo finds purpose as an artist in sharing these stories of resilience in the hopes that one day the world will be free from prejudice.

———————————————————————-

Bill Murray is an award-winning American actor, comedian, and writer. Murray is known for his deadpan delivery in roles ranging from studio comedies to independent dramas. He has appeared in movies such as Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters, Stripes, Lost in Translation just to name a few. Murray is also famous for his work on Saturday Night Live.

Murray has been part of the music scene on numerous occasions over the years performing at events including Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival and John Prine & The Steeldrivers at the Grand Ole Opry. During his years on “Saturday Night Live,” Murray portrayed Nick the Lounge Singer and entertained guests with songs like “Brandy” and most famously “Star Wars.”

Murray recently made an appearance at the Big Blues Bender at Westgate’s International Theater in September. He joined his Blood Brothers featuring Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia, along with The Bender Brass horn section for a memorable set. Bill Murray & his Blood Brothers tore through The Beatles (and before that, Larry Williams’) “Slow Down,” and Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone.” The crowd joined in for the Dylan classic, shouting back, “Like a rolling stone!” as Murray delivered good ole’ rock n roll music in an energetic and inspired that was true-form Murray.

In 2017, Murray recorded a studio album featuring singing and literary recitations titled New Worlds with classical musicians’ cellist Jan Vogler, violist Mira Wang, and pianist Vanessa Perez. Bill and the three band members then joined for a worldwide tour in 2018 combining music and poetry. New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization rolled out also in theaters in cities across the U.S. including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and more.
